5 Best Safety Tips For Rock Climbing

Rock climbing is inherently dangerous. Gravity rarely ever forgives mistakes. However, rock climbing is also a beautiful and exhilarating sport. Most rock climbers are physically fit and develop good balance and posture. In order to enjoy the beauty of the sport, it is important that rock climbers, especially beginners, familiarize themselves with the different safety rules associated with the sport. Knowing the correct gear to pack (as well as what to avoid) goes a long way in ensuring safety.

It is imperative to know that the more fit you are, the safer your climb will be. Wrists, hands, shoulders and elbows are the areas that are most vulnerable to injuries due to carelessness and over-exertion of the body. Work on balance and overall strength and not on building large muscle groups. Build your heart rate and work on finger strength.    Rock Climbing Safety Tips

Always Wear a Climbing Helmet

A Rock climbing helmet is essential if you want to live long and prosper. Always wear one when climbing or belaying. Helmets protect your head from falling rocks climbing  and from the impact of falling. Remember that your head is soft and the rock is hard. Head injuries from falls and rockfall are serious life-changing events. A helmet keeps your head safe.

Breathe

Control your breathing. This is super essential. It will again help to keep you on the wall for longer as well as keep you relaxed and focused on the next move. When working through a tough sequence of moves, take deep breathes and try to stay relaxe

Always Check Knots

Before you start climbing, always double check to make sure that the lead climber’s tie-in knot (usually a Figure-8 Follow-Through) is tied correctly and finished with a backup knot. Also check that the rope is threaded through both the waist loop and the leg loops on the harness.

Crash Pad

The crash pad is a mat which sits below the climbing wall or structure and is designed to brake the climbers fall. When bouldering, a climber is not roped up and thus has to directly consider the direction of the body when falling.

Find The Best Tips For Comfortable Mountain Trips

Driving in the mountains can be a wonderful and exhilarating experience, but it can also be tiring and cause extra wear and tear on your vehicle. Here are ten time-tested tips to make any drive more enjoyable.

Mountain Trips When you decide to have a mountain trip, you should be aware of the risks and therefore should be well prepared for it. It is not like going to the beach or to the museum. There is a huge difference when you try to get into the mountains because it is not just heights that you will be dealing with but also change in altitude, weather, wildlife and others. Here are some Safety Tips for Mountain Trip to help ensure you stay safe on the mountain trails.                               Mountain Trips

Bring safety gear There are a few basic items that every winter hiker should carry in case of emergency. Aside from basic hiking gear, you should always have a trail map, a first aid kit, a compass, a pocket knife or multi-tool, hand warming packets, and a headlamp. For a day hike, it’s a good idea to split up some of the heavier safety items among the members of your group.

It can take weeks to receive all the necessary approvals for a field trip. You need administrative approval and transportation. You need time to collect money and time to submit that money so your school can cut a check. Begin planning your field trip at least six weeks in advance of your departure date. The bigger the trip, the bigger your head start needs to be. Overnight, out-of-state, or overseas trips may need to be planned a whole year in advance.

Most mountain roads are narrower than Interstate highways. Some drivers have a tendency to hug the center line, but this driving technique is both unwise and irritating to other drivers. If you are hugging the center line, and another center-hugging vehicle comes around a curve from the opposite direction, both drivers may overcorrect and create a hazardous situation.

Lastly, be sure to reward yourself for a job well-done. When I come off a mountain, I like to find the nearest source of comfort food. Sometimes it’s a cozy bar with great burgers, sometimes it’s a lively pizza place. No worries about your appearance and aroma; restaurants at the base of any big peak are used to hikers stopping off for a meal.

Essential Tips to Improve Your Mountain Biking

The Outside Health and Fitness podcast we’re talking about mountain biking and some techniques that will help you have more fun and get more out of your ride. In the Way Outside segment we’ll look at an annual event for bike enthusiasts unlike anything you’ve ever heard of before where the winner gets a mandatory tattoo! And I’ll wrap up the show with a new fitness challenge to keep you motivated this week.

Traction is the key to successfully climbing hills on a mountain bike, this can be hard to achieve on loose rocks, roots and mud as is common place in most mountain biking areas. The biggest problem to overcome is the rear wheel spinning and slipping as you climb, or the front wheel lifting and you ending up doing an unforced wheelie. To get the right traction, you just need to learn how to distribute your weight evenly across the bike whilst feeding power to the right areas of the bike; oh yeah whilst picking the best line, pedaling at the right time and in the right gear.    Mountain Biking

Learn the Wheelies

The funny tricks with wheelies or nose wheelies [back wheel off the ground] can provide very useful maneuvering while riding through the tracks. For example, you can use little wheelie to get sufficient lift of your front wheel for passing through the obstacles and then use nose wheelie so that the rear wheel also clear the objects. You will get a smoother ride on some sections of the trail simply by taking your weight off even if you haven’t perfected your skills to get the wheels off the ground.

Maintain Your Bike

It is difficult to focus on the trail when you are listening to strange noises coming from your bike. Basic bike maintenance only takes a few minutes and it can save you from a long walk, or worse, a trip to the emergency room. Even if you can’t fix your bike, checking it will give you the chance to take it into the shop before you hit the trail.

Long distance

If you concentrate on things that you need to avoid on the adventure trails, most likely you will be hitting those rocks or trees instead of skipping them, especially on tracks with lots of roots and rocks. There is a scientific explanation to this phenomenon and concentrating on long distance known as target fixing helps you in smoothly avoiding obstacles on the track. Just concentrate on long distances along the track line during your ride for a smoother riding experience.

Relax

Whether you are riding a rigid bike or a full suspension, the best suspension you have is your arms and legs. Stand up, relax and allow them to absorb the bumps and ruts on the trail. Once you learn to let the bike move beneath you, you will be able to float over most obstacles. It also helps to relax your grip a bit on the handlebars. Be sure to hang on firmly but not too tightly. A white-knuckle death grip will cause your forearms and hands to fatigue sooner and then make it tougher to be in control.

5 Great Ways To Improve Mountain Biking

Mountain biking is all about being out there, free to explore the natural terrain but it also requires more technical skill than any other form of riding. Nobody knows that better than Rebecca Rusch, a tough-as-nails pro mountain biking biker who’s garnered seven national mountain biking titles in addition to winning the legendary Leadville 100 four times.

Regardless of your aspirations, you have to learn the basic skills before you can master the ultimate bike-handling skills. Whether you are riding for fitness, outdoor activities or professional training, your knowledge and experience will combine to make you a perfect biker. In this article, we are going to suggest basic tips that can go a long way in improving your riding performance.                                 Mountain Biking Skills

Relax

Whether you are riding a rigid conventional bike or the modern ones equipped with sophisticated suspensions, you must understand that your arms and legs serve as the best suspension during your ride. So, use your arms and legs in relaxed standing posture on the pedals to absorb the potholes or bumps during the ride. Once you master the intricacies of using your arms and hands as suspension, you will successfully glide over all the obstacles on your trail.

Maintain

It is difficult to focus on the trail when you are listening to strange noises coming from your bike. Basic bike maintenance only takes a few minutes and it can save you from a long walk, or worse, a trip to the emergency room. Even if you can’t fix your bike for adventure travel, checking it will give you the chance to take it into the shop before you hit the trail.

Stand Tall

Neutral means stacked means ready to move with somewhere to go when you need to respond to changes in terrain that isn’t OTB (over the bars). Leishman (a pro-elite downhill racer, Norco Factory Team rider) says you’ve got to stand up enough that you have room to move fore-aft, laterally, up and down. Otherwise, there’s only one direction available for you to go.

Experienced Riders

The exposure to good and experienced bikers will allow you to learn Mountain Bike 401 Trail, Crested Butte, CO, USAbetter riding habits, and you have to push extra hard to match up with them. This will create avenues of improvisation in your riding skills. You will learn by observing how they ride through rocky or rough terrains, position their bodies while descending downhill and manage to fix flat tires when they still face long rides to home.

Learn the Wheelies

Wheelies and nose wheelies (having the back wheel off the ground) are fun little tricks, and they are quite useful on the trail. You can pull a little wheelie to get your front wheel up and over an object, and then shift to a nose wheelie so your back wheel doesn’t hit. Even if you can’t get either wheel off of the ground, knowing how to take your weight off them will make some sections of trail smoother. These are easier to do with clipless pedals, but less intimidating to learn with platform pedals.
